In May 2026 our team carried out damp proofing at a home in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Inside, damp walls were stripped back, a damp proof course was put in around a bay window and chimney breast, and the walls were replastered. Outside, we repointed parts of the rear wall and carried out lead flashing work on the rear chimney. The work took 4 days.
Before and after: damp-damaged wall, then fresh plasterChimney breast stripped back to brick, then replasteredAfter: new plaster drying out
What we found
The damp was coming from more than one place. In the back right bedroom, the chimney had a penetrating damp problem and the plaster around the bay window had failed. Water was getting in around the door, and the wall by a bay window and one side of the chimney breast needed a damp proof course.
Outside, the pointing on the rear of the house had gone in a few areas, letting water in, and the lead flashing on the rear chimney needed work.
What we did
Repointed the rear of the house where needed, to stop water getting in
Carried out lead flashing work on the rear chimney
Stripped and damp proofed the wall around the door, about 5m²
Stripped the plaster to 1m by the bay window and one side of the chimney breast, about 4m in length, and put in a damp proof course
Damp proofed the chimney breast in the back right bedroom, about 6m²
Replastered around the bay window in the back right bedroom, about 2m²
The result
The damp walls were stripped, treated and replastered, and the outside of the house was put right to stop water getting in. The after photos show the new plaster still drying out. It needs to dry fully before it is painted.
A check you can do yourself
Look at the outside before you look at the inside. If the pointing is cracked or missing, or the lead around the chimney has lifted, water can get into the wall and show up as damp indoors. Fixing the inside alone won't last if the outside is still letting water in.
Questions about this job
Why did you work on the outside as well as the inside?
On this Doncaster job, part of the damp was penetrating damp from the chimney and through worn pointing. So the rear pointing and the chimney lead flashing were dealt with as well as the internal walls.
How far up was the plaster removed?
Around the bay window and one side of the chimney breast, the plaster was stripped to 1m before the damp proof course went in.
How long did the work take?
The internal damp proofing in several rooms, plus the pointing and lead work outside, took our team 4 days.
