Loft boarding in Kendal: 30m² Raised Loft Boarding Over 300mm Insulation
In September 2026, EcoTrust Roofing & Insulation Ltd lifted the old insulation from a 30m² boarded loft in Kendal, Cumbria, and laid 300mm of Knauf mineral wool in its place. The homeowner's existing boards were reused on a raised loft boarding system so the full depth sits underneath, all in one day with a 10-year guarantee.

The problem
The homeowner wanted to keep a boarded storage floor in the loft but also wanted it properly insulated. Our surveyor measured the main floor area at 30m².
Boards laid straight onto the joists leave room for only a thin layer of insulation, and anything packed under them gets squashed. The plan was to take the floor up, take out the old insulation, put 300mm back in and lift the same boards up on a raised system.
What we did
- Free survey: measured 30m² of main floor area and agreed a fixed written price.
- Lifted the existing boards and set them aside to be reused.
- Lifted, bagged and removed the old loft insulation across the 30m² floor.
- Laid new Knauf mineral wool to a total depth of 300mm.
- Fitted a raised loft boarding system and put the homeowner's own boards back on top, so the 300mm sits underneath without being squashed.
- Insulated the eaves with no boarding there, keeping the eaves ventilation path clear, then took all waste away and cleaned down.
The result
The 30m² storage floor is back in use, now sitting above a full 300mm of mineral wool. Reusing the existing boards kept waste down, and the whole job was done in one day.
The eaves are insulated and still clear for airflow, and the work is covered by EcoTrust's 10-year guarantee.
Loft boarding in Kendal: questions we get asked
Can I keep loft storage and still have 300mm of insulation?
Yes. A raised loft boarding system lifts the floor above the joists so a full 300mm of mineral wool fits underneath without being squashed. In this Kendal loft we reused the homeowner's own boards on raised supports, so they kept their storage floor and gained the full insulation depth.
Can you reuse my existing loft boards?
Often, yes, if they are sound. On this Kendal job the existing boards were lifted, set aside while the old insulation came out and 300mm went in, then refitted on a raised system. Reusing good boards cuts waste. Your surveyor will check them first.
Why should the eaves be kept clear?
The eaves are where air enters the roof space. If insulation or boards block them, moisture can build up and cause condensation and mould. In Kendal we insulated the eaves but left them unboarded and kept the ventilation path free, so the roof space can still breathe all year round.
How long does raised loft boarding take?
A typical job like this one takes a single day. In Kendal the team lifted the boards, removed the old insulation from 30m² of floor, laid 300mm of Knauf mineral wool, refitted the boards on a raised system and cleared all the waste away the same day.
