Loft boarding in Lancing: 16.5m² Loft Stripped, Insulated to 300mm and Boarded on Raised Legs
In September 2026, EcoTrust Roofing & Insulation Ltd stripped the old insulation and debris out of a 16.5m² loft in Lancing, West Sussex (BN15). We cleaned between the joists, laid 300mm of new loft insulation and fitted raised loft boarding above it, so the homeowner gained a usable storage floor without squashing the insulation underneath.
The problem
At the free survey our surveyor found a 16.5m² loft with old insulation pulled up and heaped across the joists, plus debris and bits of foam left in the space.
The homeowner wanted a boarded floor for storage. Boards laid straight onto the joists would crush any new insulation and cut its performance, so the old material had to come out and the boards had to sit higher.
What we did
- Free survey: measured the loft at 16.5m² and agreed a written price for removal, 300mm of new insulation and raised boarding.
- Removed the old 300mm of loft insulation and all the debris from the loft.
- Took out any foam found in the loft and cleaned up between the joists.
- Laid new loft insulation to a full 300mm across the 16.5m² floor.
- Fitted raised loft boarding on legs above the insulation, so the boards do not squash it.
- Fitted a temporary membrane to the underside of the roof after the boarding went in.
The result
The Lancing loft now has 300mm of new insulation across the full 16.5m² and a raised boarded floor on top for storage. The insulation keeps its full depth because the boards sit clear of it on legs.

Does loft boarding squash the insulation underneath?
It does if the boards go straight onto the joists over deep insulation. Squashed insulation loses much of its performance. In Lancing we fitted raised loft boarding on legs, so the boards sit above the 300mm of new insulation and the full depth is kept underneath the storage floor.
Do you remove old loft insulation before boarding?
Yes, when it is worn, heaped up or mixed with debris. On this Lancing job we took out the old insulation, removed debris and any foam, and cleaned between the joists. That gave a clean base for 300mm of new insulation and the raised boards on top.
How deep should loft insulation be under boarding?
