Old insulation across the whole roof space, dark with years of dust, flattened in the traffic areas and uneven everywhere else. Insulation in that state is not doing much: once it is compressed it has lost the air that makes it work.
Laying new wool straight over the top of it would have hidden the problem rather than fixed it, so it came out first.
The old material was cleared out and taken away. New mineral wool then went in to 300mm — the first layer between the joists, the second across them, so there are no cold gaps along the timbers.
15m² was then boarded out on raised legs. The legs sit the deck above the insulation instead of squashing it, which means the homeowner keeps both the storage and the full 300mm underneath it.
A clean roof space with insulation at current depth, and a boarded area that can actually be used — without the boarding undoing the work of the insulation, which is what happens when boards go straight onto the joists.
