Most lofts that already have boards have the same fault: the boards went straight onto the joists, which squashes whatever insulation is underneath them down to the depth of the timber. The homeowner gets storage and quietly loses insulation performance in the rooms below.
If the insulation is going to be at current depth, the deck has to sit above it.
The old insulation came out first, and new mineral wool went down across the joists. Raised legs were then set through the wool onto the joists, and the boarding fixed on top of those.
That leaves a gap between the underside of the boards and the top of the insulation, so nothing is pressed flat. The second photograph shows it clearly: the boarded deck sitting proud with the full depth of wool intact underneath.
