Loft insulation in Garstang: 42m² of Old Insulation Replaced With 300mm in One Day
In September 2026, EcoTrust Roofing & Insulation Ltd replaced the loft insulation in a home near Garstang, Lancashire (PR3), in a single day. The team removed and disposed of 42m² of old insulation, then laid 42m² of new Knauf mineral wool to 300mm.

The problem
The homeowner wanted to replace the old insulation in the loft. Our surveyor measured 42m² of it, all needing to be taken out and disposed of before new insulation could go in.
Getting 42m² of old insulation down through the house would have been messy, so we planned to bag it in the loft and pass it out through a top floor Velux or window instead.
What we did
- Free survey: measured 42m² of old insulation and agreed a written price for removal and 300mm of new Knauf mineral wool.
- Bagged up all the old insulation in the loft and took it out through the top floor Velux or window, keeping it away from the rooms below.
- Cleared the loft back to the joists.
- Laid new Knauf mineral wool between the joists, then a second layer across them to reach 300mm over the full 42m².
- Cleaned and vacuumed before leaving, and took all the old insulation away.
The result
The 42m² loft now has 300mm of new Knauf mineral wool in place of the old insulation, and the whole job was done in one day.
The work is covered by EcoTrust's 10-year guarantee. The homeowner left a five-star review afterwards, mentioning that the team arrived on time, worked hard and cleaned and vacuumed thoroughly before they left.
Loft insulation in Garstang: questions we get asked
How long does it take to replace loft insulation?
A loft of around 40m² can usually be stripped and reinsulated in one day. Near Garstang we removed 42m² of old insulation and laid 42m² of new Knauf mineral wool to 300mm in a single day, then cleaned and vacuumed before leaving.
Will removing old loft insulation make a mess in my house?
It should not. We bag old insulation in the loft and, where we can, take it out through a window or Velux rather than carrying it through the house. On this Garstang job the bags went out through the top floor, and the team vacuumed before leaving.
Why replace old loft insulation instead of topping it up?
Old insulation that is flattened, dusty or patchy keeps little heat in, and new wool laid on top inherits the gaps. Taking it out lets us check the loft and lay new wool evenly. In Garstang we removed all 42m² before laying 300mm of new Knauf mineral wool.
What insulation do you use in lofts?
For most lofts we use mineral wool rolls, laid in two layers to about 300mm: one between the joists and one across them. This Garstang loft was done with Knauf mineral wool, which is easy to lay evenly and does not need any special ventilation changes.
