Loft insulation in Huddersfield: 25m² of Old Insulation Replaced With 300mm in One Day
In June 2026, EcoTrust Roofing & Insulation Ltd stripped 25m² of old insulation and loose boarding from a loft in Netherton, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, and cleaned out between the joists. The team then laid new Knauf mineral wool to 300mm in one day, kept the existing raised boarded area, and backed the loft insulation with a 10-year guarantee.

The problem
Our surveyor found 25m² of old insulation in this Netherton loft that needed to come out, along with old loose boarding lying across the joists.
Part of the loft already had raised boarding the homeowner wanted to keep. The rest needed stripping and cleaning back to the joists so new insulation could sit evenly and tight up to the boarded area.
What we did
- Free survey: measured 25m² of loft floor and agreed a written price for removal and 300mm of new insulation.
- Removed the old insulation and took out and disposed of the old loose boarding.
- Cleaned out between the joists with an industrial vacuum.
- Left the existing raised boarded area in place and trimmed the insulation tight up to it.
- Laid new Knauf mineral wool to a total depth of 300mm across the 25m².
- Bagged up all the waste and took it away the same day.
The result
The 25m² loft floor now has 300mm of new Knauf mineral wool, with the insulation fitted snugly against the raised boarded area. The whole job was done in one day.
The work is covered by EcoTrust's 10-year guarantee on loft insulation.
Loft insulation in Huddersfield: questions we get asked
Should old loft insulation be removed before new insulation goes in?
Often, yes. Old insulation that is dirty, squashed or mixed with loose boards leaves gaps and cold spots. In this Huddersfield loft we removed 25m² of old insulation and loose boarding, vacuumed between the joists, then laid new mineral wool so it sat evenly at the full 300mm depth.
Can you insulate a loft and keep my existing loft boarding?
Yes. On this Netherton job the homeowner kept their raised boarded area for storage. We left it in place, cleaned up around it and fitted the new insulation tight up to the edge of the boards, so there are no gaps along the boarded section.
How deep should loft insulation be?
Current guidance for lofts is around 270mm to 300mm of mineral wool. We lay 300mm of Knauf mineral wool as standard, as we did in Huddersfield, one layer between the joists and a second across them, so heat cannot escape through the timber and gaps.
How long does it take to replace loft insulation?
A small to average loft is usually done in a day. This 25m² Huddersfield loft took one day, covering removal of the old insulation and loose boards, cleaning between the joists, laying 300mm of new mineral wool and taking all the waste away.
