Loft insulation in Northwich: 38m² of Old 100mm Insulation Replaced With 300mm in One Day
In September 2026, EcoTrust Roofing & Insulation Ltd stripped out tired 100mm loft insulation from a 38m² loft in Cuddington, Northwich, Cheshire, and replaced it with a full 300mm of new insulation. The team also boarded 5m² next to the loft hatch for storage, completing the job in one day.

The problem
The loft in Cuddington had just 100mm of old insulation across 38m², well short of the 270mm to 300mm recommended today, so it was doing little to keep heat in.
The homeowner also wanted somewhere to store things. Boarding straight over insulation squashes it, so the storage area had to be planned alongside the new insulation.
What we did
- Free survey: measured 38m² of loft floor with 100mm of old insulation and agreed a written price.
- Bagged up and removed the old 100mm insulation from the whole 38m².
- Laid new mineral wool between and over the joists to a full 300mm.
- Boarded a 5m² area next to the loft hatch for storage.
- Cleared up and took all the old insulation away.
The result
The 38m² loft went from 100mm of tired insulation to 300mm of new mineral wool in a single day, with a 5m² boarded area by the hatch for storage.
The work is covered by EcoTrust's 10-year guarantee.
Loft insulation in Northwich: questions we get asked
Should old loft insulation be removed before new is laid?
Not always, but often it is the better job. In Cuddington, Northwich the old 100mm layer was tired and thin, so we bagged it all up and took it away. The new 300mm then sat evenly on clean joists, with no hidden debris or squashed patches underneath.
Is 100mm of loft insulation enough?
No. 100mm was common decades ago, but current guidance is around 270mm to 300mm. A loft with only 100mm is losing far more heat than it needs to. This Northwich loft was taken from 100mm to 300mm across all 38m² in one day.
Can I board my loft and still have 300mm of insulation?
Yes, if it is planned properly. Laying boards straight onto insulation squashes it and cuts its performance. On this Northwich job we insulated the whole loft to 300mm and boarded a 5m² storage area next to the hatch, where it is easiest to reach.
How long does replacing loft insulation take?
Most lofts take one day, including removing the old insulation. This 38m² loft in Cuddington, with the old 100mm stripped out, new 300mm laid and 5m² boarded for storage, was finished in a single day. Large or very full lofts can take two.
