Loft insulation in Rhyl: 77m² Loft Stripped and Relaid to 300mm in One Day

In October 2026, EcoTrust Roofing & Insulation Ltd stripped the poor existing loft insulation out of a 77m² loft in Rhyl, Denbighshire (LL18). The team relaid new Knauf mineral wool to a full 300mm across the whole floor in a single day, backed by a 10-year guarantee.

The problem

Our surveyor rated the existing loft insulation in this Rhyl home as poor. It was thin, patchy and had settled between the joists, leaving the timber tops and plenty of gaps exposed.

Topping up over worn insulation like that hides the problem rather than fixing it, so the homeowner chose a full strip out and a fresh 300mm across the 77m² floor.

What we did

  1. Free survey: measured the loft at 77m², checked the existing insulation and agreed a fixed written price on the day.
  2. Stripped out the old, worn loft insulation from between the joists.
  3. Laid a first layer of 100mm Knauf mineral wool between the joists.
  4. Laid a second 200mm layer across the joists to reach a full 300mm.
  5. Bagged up the old insulation and took all the waste away.

The result

The whole 77m² loft now has 300mm of new Knauf mineral wool, laid evenly with the joists covered. The job was finished in one day, as planned at the survey.

The work is covered by EcoTrust's 10-year guarantee, issued once the job was signed off.

Loft insulation in Rhyl: questions we get asked

Should old loft insulation be removed before new is laid?

If it is thin, flattened or patchy, yes. Laying new wool over worn insulation leaves cold spots and hides any problems underneath. In this Rhyl loft the old insulation was rated poor, so we stripped it all out and relaid 300mm of new mineral wool across the 77m² floor.

How long does it take to strip and relay loft insulation?

Most average lofts take one day. This 77m² loft in Rhyl was stripped and relaid to 300mm in a single day by one EcoTrust team. Bigger lofts, or lofts full of stored items or boards, can take a second day, and we tell you that at the survey.

How deep should loft insulation be?

Current guidance is around 270mm to 300mm of mineral wool. We always lay Knauf mineral wool to 300mm: one layer between the joists and a second layer across them, so the tops of the timbers are covered and heat cannot escape along them.

Is loft insulation guaranteed?

Yes. EcoTrust loft insulation comes with a 10-year guarantee. On this Rhyl job the guarantee was issued once the work was finished and signed off, so the homeowner has it on file if they ever sell the house or need to check the work.
