Loft insulation in Sleaford: 40m² Loft Stripped and Relaid to 300mm With a Boarded Walkway in One Day
In September 2026, EcoTrust Roofing & Insulation Ltd removed and disposed of the old insulation from a 40m² loft in South Rauceby, near Sleaford, Lincolnshire, and laid new loft insulation to 300mm. The team also insulated a 6m² loft area over the bathroom, boarded a walkway through the middle of the loft to the water tank and lagged the pipework, all in 1 day.

The problem
The main loft was about 40m², and the old insulation across it needed to come out rather than be topped up. A smaller 6m² loft area at the far end, over the bathroom, also needed insulating.
There was no safe way across the joists to reach the water tank, and the pipework in the loft was bare, so it was exposed to the cold in winter.
What we did
- Free survey: measured the main loft at 40m² plus 6m² over the bathroom, and agreed a written price.
- Removed the old insulation from the 40m² main loft and took it away for disposal.
- Laid new loft insulation to 300mm across the main loft.
- Insulated the 6m² loft area over the bathroom at the far end.
- Boarded a walkway through the middle of the loft so the water tank can be reached safely.
- Lagged the pipework in the loft.
The result
The 40m² main loft now has 300mm of new insulation, the 6m² area over the bathroom is insulated, and there is a boarded route straight to the water tank. The whole job took 1 day.
The pipes in the loft are lagged against the cold, and the work is covered by EcoTrust's 10-year guarantee.
Loft insulation in Sleaford: questions we get asked
Should old loft insulation be removed or just topped up?
If the old insulation is flattened, dirty or patchy, removing it first usually gives a better result than laying more on top. Near Sleaford we stripped 40m² of old insulation, took it away for disposal and laid new insulation to 300mm, so the loft started again from a clean, even base.
Can you board a loft without squashing the insulation?
Yes, if the boarding is planned with the insulation. In this South Rauceby loft we boarded a single walkway through the middle to the water tank, so it can be reached safely while the rest of the loft keeps its full 300mm depth. Squashed insulation loses much of its performance.
Do you lag pipes in the loft?
Yes. Once a loft is insulated to 300mm, the roof space above gets colder, so bare pipes up there are more exposed in winter. On this job near Sleaford we lagged the loft pipework at the same time as the insulation and boarding, so everything was done in one visit.
How long does it take to replace loft insulation?
Most average lofts take a day. This Sleaford area job took 1 day: removing the old insulation from 40m², laying new insulation to 300mm, insulating 6m² over the bathroom, boarding a walkway to the water tank and lagging the pipes. Larger or cluttered lofts can take longer.
