Loft insulation in Tadcaster: Old Boards Lifted, 21m² Relaid to 300mm and 13 Downlights Covered
In July 2026, EcoTrust Roofing & Insulation Ltd insulated the loft of a home in Stutton, near Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, in one day. The team lifted and disposed of old boards over 21m² and relaid it to 300mm, laid 100mm over 15m² of new extension and fitted 13 downlight covers over the bathroom areas, backed by a 10-year guarantee.

The problem
Part of this Stutton loft was covered in old boards, with tired insulation underneath, so 21m² of the floor had little real protection. A newer extension had 15m² of loft space that also needed insulating.
There were also 13 downlights over the bathroom areas. Without covers, insulation cannot safely go over them, and the gaps around them let warm, damp air into the loft.
What we did
- Free survey: measured the loft and extension, counted the downlights and agreed a fixed written price.
- Lifted the old boards across 21m² and took them away for disposal.
- Fitted 13 downlight covers over the bathroom areas.
- Relaid the 21m² main area with Knauf mineral wool to a full 300mm.
- Laid 100mm of mineral wool across the 15m² extension loft.
- Checked the timbers for mould while the boards were up and fixed the wiring neat and tight to the joists.
The result
The main loft now has 300mm of mineral wool across the 21m² that was boarded, the extension has its 15m² insulated and all 13 downlights are covered. The whole job took one day.
The work is covered by EcoTrust's 10-year guarantee.
Loft insulation in Tadcaster: questions we get asked
Can you insulate over downlights in the loft?
Only with a proper cover fitted first. Covers keep insulation clear of the light fitting and seal the gap that lets warm, damp air into the loft. In this Tadcaster loft we fitted 13 downlight covers over the bathroom areas before any insulation went down.
Do old loft boards need to come up before insulating?
If there is little insulation underneath, yes. Boards laid straight on the joists leave only a thin layer below. In Stutton, near Tadcaster, we lifted and disposed of 21m² of old boards so the area could be relaid to a full 300mm of mineral wool.
Can you insulate an extension loft at the same time?
Yes. Extension roof spaces are often missed or done to a different depth. On this Tadcaster job we laid 100mm of mineral wool across the 15m² extension loft on the same day as the main loft, so the whole house was done in one visit.
How long does a job like this take?
This Tadcaster loft took one day: old boards up and away, 13 downlight covers fitted, 21m² relaid to 300mm and 15m² of extension insulated. Your EcoTrust surveyor tells you the likely time and gives a fixed written price at the free survey.
