A growing family in Preston was running out of storage space downstairs and wanted to use the loft safely. They did not want boarding that would flatten the insulation or create an awkward, unstable area to walk on.
The goal: safe loft storage without crushing the insulation beneath the boards.
The 74m² loft had no usable boarded platform and needed a raised structure above the insulation zone. Boarding directly onto the joists would have compressed the 270mm mineral wool and reduced its thermal performance.
That is the part most people do not see coming. A direct-to-joist board squeezes the insulation and creates cold spots in the rooms below — so the family would have gained storage and quietly lost some of what the insulation was doing.
We installed a Loft Leg raised system, retained the 270mm mineral wool beneath the platform and fitted 18mm storage boarding over three days. Raising the deck above the insulation keeps it uncompressed while still giving a stable walking and storage surface.
